Chapter 2: The Accoustics of Attraction

The warm, ambient amber lighting of the bungalow’s ground-floor dining space cast long, romantic shadows across the dark teak table. Outside, a light evening drizzle was tapping against the broad glass panes, creating a soothing rhythm that seemed to isolate their quiet two-story sanctuary from the rest of Pune. The scent of roasted spices, fresh roti, and rich dal filled the air—a simple, middle-class meal that Vaishnavi had lovingly prepared, though Shashank had insisted on standing by her side in the kitchen earlier to handle the slicing and chopping with surgical precision.

Shashank sat at the head of the polished table, wearing a dark navy casual shirt with the top two buttons left undone. The heavy silver Vedic medallion around his neck glistened softly under the low lights, resting against his broad, muscular chest. Even in a relaxed setting, his aura remained undeniably magnetic—a dangerous blend of unmatched intelligence, imposing physical presence, and the effortless confidence of a man who had been raised to command every room he stepped into. Across from him sat Vaishnavi, looking breathtakingly pure in a simple coral-colored cotton kurti, her long dark hair loosely tied in a low clip, a few stray strands framing her glowing face.

They were halfway through dinner, enjoying a rare moment of peaceful quiet, when Vaishnavi’s smartphone resting beside her plate began to vibrate aggressively on the wooden surface. The screen lit up with a group video call notification labeled with a colorful array of emojis: "The Dhamaka Gang (21)".

Vaishnavi immediately paused, her fork hovering in mid-air as a nervous blush spread across her cheeks. "Yeh toh humare cousins ka group call hai," Vaishnavi murmured softly, looking at Shashank with a mix of affection and slight embarrassment. "Pata nahi ek saath sabhi log kyun phone kar rahe hain. Aap disturbed toh nahi honge?"

(This is a group call from my cousins. I don't know why everyone is calling together. You won't be disturbed, right?)

Shashank set his glass of water down with a slow, deliberate movement. A slight, intriguing smirk touched the corners of his lips. He leaned back in his chair, folding his arms across his broad chest, his dark eyes locking onto hers with calm amusement.

"Disturbed?" Shashank said, his voice a low, confident baritone. "Main kyun disturb hounga? Speaker pe rakho aur video call uthao."

(Why would I be disturbed? Put it on speaker and answer the video call.)

Vaishnavi swiped the screen to accept the incoming video call and set the phone upright against a small decorative centerpiece in the middle of the table, switching the audio to speaker mode.

Instantly, the quiet dining room was transformed into an explosion of chaotic joy, overlapping voices, and frantic waving. The screen revealed a massive gathering crammed into a single large living room back in her hometown—at least fifteen to twenty cousins of all ages, from rowdy teenagers and college students to older married cousins and young children jumping in the background.

"Vaishnavi Didi! Jiju kahan hain?" yelled eighteen-year-old Rohan, pushing his way to the front of the camera lens.

(Vaishnavi Didi! Where is brother-in-law?)

"Didi, camera jiju ki taraf ghumao na!" chorused two teenage girls, Simran and Ananya, squealing in excitement.

(Didi, turn the camera towards brother-in-law!)

"Haath hato tum log, pehle mujhe baat karne do!" shouted Rahul, an older cousin in his late twenties, grinning widely as he tried to secure the phone.

(Move away you guys, let me speak first!)

Vaishnavi’s face turned bright red as she tried to calm the chaotic crowd down. "Tum log ek saath kyun chilla rahe ho? Aise baat karte hain kya?"

(Why are you all shouting at once? Is this how you talk?)

Before Vaishnavi could manage the storm, Shashank leaned forward into the camera frame. His sudden, imposing presence on the screen—complete with his jawline, deep eyes, and smooth dark charm—instantly caused a wave of gasps and excited murmuring through the phone speaker.

"Hello sabhi ko," Shashank spoke smoothly, his deep Hindi clear and perfectly modulated, a cool, playful smile lighting up his face. "Kaise hain aap sab? Lagta hai aaj puri sena ek saath taiyar ho kar baithi hai."

(Hello to everyone. How are you all? It seems the entire army is sitting ready together today.)

The entire group on the other end erupted into cheers and giggles.

"Jiju! Aap toh waise hi dikhte hain jaise Didi ke photos mein dikhte the, bilkul hero waale look mein!" shouted young Kabir, making everyone in the room laugh out loud.

(Jiju! You look just like you did in Didi's photos, totally in a hero look!)

Shashank chuckled smoothly, placing a heavy arm over the back of Vaishnavi’s chair and pulling her just a tiny bit closer to him under the table. "Hero ka toh pata nahi, Kabir, lekin jab tumhari Didi ghar mein gussa karti hai, toh mujhe villian jaisa feel zaroor karwa deti hai," Shashank replied playfully, shooting a shameless, teasing side-glance at Vaishnavi.

(I don't know about being a hero, Kabir, but when your sister gets angry at home, she definitely makes me feel like a villain.)

"Humne kab gussa kiya?" Vaishnavi immediately protested in a hushed whisper, her cheeks burning as she lightly tapped his knee under the table.

(When did I get angry?)

The cousins on the call went wild with laughter at Shashank’s lighthearted banter.

"Jiju, Didi aapko pareshan toh nahi karti na?" asked Neha, one of the college-going cousins. "Agar woh aapko zyaada strictness dikhaye, toh aap hume boliyega, hum unki childhood secret leak kar denge!"

(Jiju, Didi doesn't trouble you, right? If she shows you too much strictness, tell us, we will leak her childhood secrets!)

Shashank’s eyes gleamed with mischievous interest. He rested his chin on his palm, leaning closer to the phone mic. "Achha? Ye offer toh bohot tempting hai, Neha. Main toh bilkul sunna chahunga. Tumhari Didi mujhe hamesha batati hai ki woh bachpan se bohot seedhi aur bhole nature ki rahi hain. Kya yeh sach nahi hai?"

(Really? This offer is very tempting, Neha. I would definitely like to hear. Your sister always tells me that she has been very simple and innocent since childhood. Is that not true?)

"Bilkul nahi, Jiju!" the cousin gang shouted in unison, followed by high-pitched laughter.

(Not at all, Jiju!)

Vaishnavi covered her face with both hands, groaning softly. "Aap log humari izzat utarne ke liye phone kiye hain kya?" (Did you guys call just to embarrass me?) she spoke through her fingers, though a bright, happy smile was radiating from her face. She had never expected her high-profile, brilliant scientist husband to blend so effortlessly and warmly into her chaotic middle-class family dynamic. He was being the absolute coolest, most charming jiju imaginable.

"Jiju, ek baat bataiye," Rahul, the older cousin, chimed in with genuine curiosity and respect. "Aap DRDO mein itne bade research scientist hain, news mein hum aapke projects ke baare mein sunte hain. Aap itne tense atmosphere mein kaam karte hain, phir bhi aap itne cool aur relaxed kaise rehte hain?"

(Jiju, tell us one thing. You are such a big research scientist in DRDO, we hear about your projects in the news. You work in such a tense atmosphere, yet how do you stay so cool and relaxed?)

Shashank’s expression softened into a smooth, sharp smirk, his father’s acute business wit playing subtly behind his words. "Rahul, life mein chahe defense research ki meeting ho, ya business deals ho, ya phir yeh cousins ka noisy video call—chaos hamesha rahega. Game bas yeh hai ki tum focus kahan rakhte ho. Main pressure mein panic hone ke bajaye system ko control karna pasand karta hoon."

(Rahul, whether it is defense research meetings in life, or business deals, or this noisy video call of cousins—chaos will always be there. The game is just where you keep your focus. Instead of panicking under pressure, I prefer to control the system.)

"Wah Jiju! Kya line boli hai!" Rohan cheered from the back. "Next time main college exam ke pressure mein hounga, toh yahi dialogue bolunga!"

(Wow Jiju! What a line you said. Next time I am under college exam pressure, I will say this exact dialogue!)

"Exam ke liye padhai karni padti hai, Rohan, dialogue-baazi se marks nahi milte," Shashank retorted instantly with a wicked grin, causing the whole cousin group to burst into tears of laughter at Rohan's expense.

(You have to study for exams, Rohan, you don't get marks from snappy dialogues,)

For the next twenty minutes, Shashank completely stole the spotlight. He answered their quirky questions, teased the younger kids about their school marks, promised to take the whole gang out for a grand dinner whenever they visited Mumbai or Pune, and effortlessly won over every single heart on the call. He wasn't the distant, arrogant billionaire's son or the unreachable defense genius—he was simply their warm, witty, incredibly cool jiju who held Vaishnavi’s hand tenderly beneath the table while keeping everyone entertained.

"Achha Jiju, ab hum rakhte hain, aap dono dinner enjoy kariye!" Neha said warmly. "Aur Didi ko zyaada kaam mat karwane dijiyega!"

(Okay Jiju, now we will hang up, you both enjoy dinner! And don't let Didi do too much work!)

"Bilkul nahi. Didi ka khayal rakhne ke liye main hoon na," Shashank replied smoothly, his eyes turning to look directly into Vaishnavi’s wide, shimmering eyes. "Bye everyone."

(Not at all. I am here to take care of Didi, Bye everyone.)

"Bye Jiju! Bye Didi!" chorus echoed before the call finally disconnected, returning the spacious dining room and kitchen area to a heavy, intimate silence.

Vaishnavi let out a long, dramatic sigh of relief, slumping back into her chair, though her cheeks were hot and her heart was fluttering wildly. She looked at Shashank, who was watching her with a calm, predatory grace, a sly smile still playing on his lips.

"Humne toh socha nahi tha ki aap humare cousins ke saath itni baatein karenge," Vaishnavi murmured, a sweet, playful pout forming on her lips as she gathered the empty bowls. "Aapne toh unhe humare khilaf hi kar diya. Ab woh sab aapki side hain."

(I hadn't thought that you would talk so much with my cousins. You turned them completely against me. Now they are all on your side.)

Shashank didn't answer immediately. He stood up slowly from his chair, his tall, six-foot-plus frame towering over the table with quiet authority. He unbuttoned the cuffs of his navy shirt, rolling the sleeves up past his muscular forearms, revealing the dark hair and hard contours of his arms.

"Main humesha winning side par rehta hoon, Vaishnavi," Shashank said in a low, velvet baritone, his voice suddenly shifting into something far deeper and far more dangerous than the casual tone he had used on the call. "Aur filhal, tumhare family ka dil jeetna meri strategy ka pehla step tha."

(I am always on the winning side, Vaishnavi. And currently, winning your family's heart was just the first step of my strategy.)

Vaishnavi felt a sudden, delicious wave of tension spark through the air. She picked up the stack of plates and hurriedly turned around, walking into the adjacent modern kitchen to escape his intense gaze. The kitchen was pristine, with sleek dark granite countertops, stainless steel fixtures, and ambient under-cabinet lighting that created a cozy, private cocoon.

She placed the dishes into the sink and turned on the tap to wash her hands, attempting to hide the nervous thrill running down her spine. "Aap bohot bade gamer hain, Shashank," she called out, trying to keep her tone casual as she dried her hands on a soft hand towel. "Pata nahi aapne aur kya-kya strategize kar rakha hai."

(You are a very big gamer, Shashank. I don't know what else you have strategized.)

She turned around to face the kitchen doorway, but her breath instantly caught in her throat.

Shashank was already standing right in front of her.

He had moved without making a single sound, approaching her like a silent, deliberate shadow. Before she could even step to the side, Shashank stepped directly into her personal space. He placed his broad palms firmly on the cold granite counter behind her, one on either side of her waist, effectively trapping her within the dark, solid cage of his body.

The physical contrast between them was striking. Vaishnavi felt small, delicate, and entirely surrounded by his broad shoulders, his commanding height, and the intoxicating scent of expensive sandalwood, rain, and raw masculine heat that radiated from him.

"Shashank..."Vaishnavi whispered, her voice dropping to a small, breathless tremble. She pressed her back flat against the edge of the kitchen counter, her small hands resting lightly on his firm chest, right over the silver Vedic medallion. "Yeh kya kar rahe hain aap? Hum bartan saaf kar rahe the."

(What are you doing? I was cleaning the dishes.)

Shashank didn't back away even an inch. Instead, he leaned down slowly, his dark, mesmerizing eyes locked onto hers with shamelessly intense, possessive desire. His warm breath brushed against her skin, sending a ripple of goosebumps across her neck and arms.

"Bartan baad mein saaf ho sakte hain, Vaishnavi," Shashank murmured, his voice dropping into a thrilling, low rasp that thrilled her to her core. "Pehle mujhe ek bohot serious calculation complete karni hai."

(Dishes can be cleaned later, Vaishnavi. First I have to complete a very serious calculation.)

Vaishnavi’s heart began to hammer violently against her ribs. She could feel her own pulse racing in her throat. "Kaisi... kaisi calculation?" (What... what kind of calculation?)

Shashank brought one hand up from the counter, his long, warm fingers gently tracing the delicate outline of her jaw, his thumb softly resting against the corner of her lower lip.

"DRDO ke laboratory mein mere paas sabse advanced sensors aur telemetry tracking equipment hain," Shashank said softly, a dark, wickedly charming smirk spreading across his face as he leaned closer, his nose softly grazing the sensitive shell of her ear. "Lekin jab se main tumhare paas aaya hoon, meri local sensor reading completely disrupt ho rahi hai."

(In the DRDO laboratory I have the most advanced sensors and telemetry tracking equipment But ever since I came close to you, my local sensor reading is getting completely disrupted.)

Vaishnavi gasped softly, her fingers instinctively clutching the dark fabric of his navy shirt as his lips lightly brushed the sensitive curve of her neck, right above her collarbone.

"Aap... aap aisi baatein kyun karte hain?" Vaishnavi whispered, her eyes fluttering shut as a deep, helpless shyness washed over her. "Humare heartbeat ka aapke sensors se kya lena-dena?"

(Why... why do you talk like this? What does my heartbeat have to do with your sensors?)

"Bohot lena-dena hai, jaan," Shashank murmured right against her skin, his hand sliding slowly down from her jaw to cup the back of her neck, his fingers tangling into her soft hair to hold her gently in place. "Tumhara dil itni tez dhadak raha hai ki mere poore body ka system override ho raha hai. Cold logic, defense algorithms, military precision... sab fail ho jata hai jab tum mere itne kareeb hoti ho."

(It has everything to do with it, my life. Your heart is beating so fast that my entire body system is getting overridden. Cold logic, defense algorithms, military precision... everything fails when you are this close to me.)

Vaishnavi opened her eyes, gazing up into his dark, hungry gaze. The cynicism and caution that he usually carried against the world had completely melted away, leaving behind pure, unadulterated passion that was reserved exclusively for her. She knew he had spent his past guarding himself against deceitful women, but in her presence, he offered absolute, unreserved devotion.

"Hum toh bas aapke paas rehna chahte hain, Shashank," Vaishnavi confessed sweetly, her modest shell melting under his shameless charm as her arms slid up around his neck, her fingers touching his hair. "Humne toh kabhi nahi socha tha ki aap humse itna pyaar karenge."

(I just want to be close to you, Shashank. I had never thought that you would love me so much.)

Shashank’s dark eyes softened with an intense, burning devotion. "Pyaar?" (Love?) Shashank echoed, his thumb gently stroking her flushed cheek. "Jaan, main tumse sirf pyaar nahi karta. Tum meri pehli aur aakhri addiction ho. Main poori duniya se lad sakta hoon, outsmart kar sakta hoon, lekin tumhare aage main khushi se har baazi haar sakta hoon."

(My life, I don't just love you. You are my first and last addiction. I can fight the whole world, outsmart anyone, but in front of you I can happily lose every game.)

Before she could speak another word, Shashank leaned down and captured her lips in a deep, breathtaking, possessive kiss.

Vaishnavi let out a soft, muted sigh against his mouth as his lips moved over hers with slow, masterfully demanding heat. The kiss was deep, rich, and filled with a lingering intensity that consumed every inch of her senses. Shashank held her securely against the edge of the kitchen counter, his left arm wrapping tightly around her lower back to pull her flush against his solid body, leaving no space between them.

His lips parted hers with smooth, practiced dominance, tasting her fully, drinking in her sweet warmth as if she were the only reality that mattered in his complex, dangerous world. Every trace of the cold scientist was gone, replaced by the raw, consuming passion of a man completely captivated by his wife. Vaishnavi’s head swam, her body turning soft and pliable in his arms as she stood on her tiptoes, tightening her grip around his neck, surrendering completely to the intoxicating pull of his rhythm.

When he finally pulled back a tiny fraction of an inch to let her breathe, their foreheads remained rested together, their hot breath mingling in the dim light of the kitchen. Vaishnavi was completely breathless, her eyes heavy and shining with deep affection, her lips swollen and dark red from his kiss.

Shashank looked down at her flushed, starry face, his deep chest rising and falling against hers, a triumphant, dangerously handsome smile gracing his features.

"Ab batao, Vaishnavi," Shashank whispered, his thumb gently wiping a trace of moisture from her lower lip, his voice thick with deep affection. "Abhi bhi lagta hai ki tumhara pati sirf baatein karna jaanta hain?"

(Now tell me, Vaishnavi. Do you still think that your husband only knows how to talk?)

Vaishnavi hid her blushing face in the crook of his neck, her hands pressing firmly against his broad, warm back as she laughed softly. "Aap sach mein bohot kharab hain, Shashank... lekin hume aapka yeh roop bohot accha lagta hai."

(You are really very bad, Shashank... but I like this form of yours very much.)

Shashank wrapped both arms tightly around her, lifting her slightly off the kitchen floor and holding her close against his heart, letting the quiet rain outside play the background music to their perfect, private world.
